Song of the Day

As I'm here at work (check the date of the posting) the following song appeared on Lauchcast:

Ugly Kid Joe / Cat's in the Cradle

I cranked it.

What in the world are you doing at work on a Saturday??? Did you do this completely voluntarily, or is this an example of "voluntary" mandatory overtime, i.e. slave labor (or put another way, management's punishment of employees for management's own poor planning)? Do you have the ability to work from home?

There are a few factors at work here.

1) If I don't get the job done, there's someone in China who will. Or at least, management will be eager to give someone in China the chance, whether or not the job is done any better there. Of course, this concern only goes so far.

2) Management's planning is largely based on estimates from development, isn't it? If the development estimates are incorrect, it's a little difficult to place the blame solely on management.

3) When finding a problem with a design that has the potential of undesirably wiping out lots of customer data, I kind of feel better fixing the problem before it's well-known. Sure, testing would find such problems before it's delivered. (Doesn't it always?) But it's nice to take care of it before it's an issue.

4) I have no ability to connect to the company's computer network from home. Back when I had a land-line phone, I could via a dial-up connection, which I used rarely. There is a different way to login from home via broadband, but I have never investigated it in detail. I don't really consider having the ability to work from home to be a good thing.
