Photo From Recent Band Concert

Sorry about the quality, but here's a photo from a recent band concert.

(Also, more evidence that the times, they are a-changin': Back in my era, the flute was exclusively a female's instrument. The idea of a boy flute player was unthinkable!)

It was also like that in my neck of the woods. Also, clarinet players were exclusively female. Any boy who thought of playing the flute or clarinet would have had his masculinity called into serious question. I even got a bit of razzing from playing the piano! I don't know where the idea came from that males shouldn't be flute or clarinet players. I mean, it worked pretty well for Ian Anderson and Benny Goodman, as I don't recall their manhoods ever being challenged. Personally, I'm glad to see a boy flute player. That's progress!

We did have a few male clarinet players when I was in the younger grades. However, apparently in order to prove their masculinity, they seemed to all switch to tuba (sousaphone) for high school marching band.
