Is It Rude To Take A Flash Picture At A Concert?

Outside the venue

Miranda Sound (no flash) -- I had never heard them before, but upon first listen, I liked these guys.

Troubled Hubble (no flash, somewhat stationary and tuning between songs)

The Wrens (no flash, almost artistic)

The Wrens (with flash) I hope nobody minded.

I always um and ah about taking a camera to gigs. I love the idea of having photos but I worry about a whole host of things (upsetting the band, broken camera, getting kicked out, etc). It's so hard to get a crisp photo inside a venue, all zoomed in with no flash.

I think the answer is a couple of early flash photos and then find a nice perch away from the crowd to steady the camera for a few shots without the flash. The other problem is spending too much time worrying about photos and not enjoying the gig. This is the main reason I'm not interested in taping gigs. Who needs to be looking at their watch worrying when the tape will run out.

If you ever venture out to see King Crimson make sure you leave the flash at home. Robert Fripp hates them so much he stops gigs to tell people off.

I would think a lesser known pub band would be pleased with the attention though. Perhaps you can make it all good by sending them a copy.

One final thought...

Natural (at least not flash) lit photos look so much nicer too. The first few shots look like a lovely warm atmospheric venue. Once the flash comes out it looks like the band is playing in the next cubicle under some nasty office fluorescents.

What to do...What to do...
